Hypnotherapy is a cooperative interaction between the client and the hypnotist to induce a trance-like state resembling sleep but is not sleep. You are in a safe and relaxed state of mind in order for you to accept the suggestions that you WANT to accept. Hypnosis cannot make you do anything which is against your morals or values. Hollywood has hijacked hypnosis. A hypnotist cannot make you do something that is deemed wrong to you. Stage hypnosis has had people quack like a duck, bark like a dog, but if those people did not want to entertain, they would not do it. It is fun to watch a stage hypnotist, they are there to entertain. That is not Hypnotherapy. If you do not want to be hypnotized, you cannot be hypnotized.
Even in Clinical Hypnosis the client must want to be hypnotized and something in them changed or they would not be in the hypnotists' office. The hypnosis practitioner will conduct a "Pre-Talk", like an interview, before the session. This is to convey information the hypnotist needs to determine the best technique to use for this particular client. Hypnosis is safe. No one has ever been stuck in hypnosis or had any kind of bad reaction. It has been used by the Mayo Clinic since the 1950s. Many large Universities have published papers on the value of Hypnosis. In the late '50s and early '60s, Dave Elman quit his job at Columbia Univerisity to teach Doctors and Dentists hynosis. The history of hypnosis dates back as far as the 11th Century with Avicenna, the Persian physician noted the restorative powers of a relaxed trance.
